Paradise Lost? Conservation in the Caribbean
Fauna and Flora International, in conjunction with the BBC Natural
History Unit, will be presenting an evening on conservation issues
in the Caribbean. FFI, partnered with local organisations, are
working on the restoration of offshore islands, looking at sustainable
site management, in situ breeding and conservation of the indigenous
species including one of the world's rarest snakes, the Antiguan
Racer.

The Sea Empress Recovery Conference
On February 15th 1996, the oil tanker Sea Empress ran aground
at the entrance to Milford Haven the UK's busiest oil port. By
the time the vessel was recovered, 72,000 tonnes of light crude
oil had been spilt, affecting some of Wales's most magnificent
beaches, coastline and ecologically important areas. Pollution
also reached the coast of Ireland. This conference aims to ntegrate
the experiences of communities affected by oil spill incidents.
Those involved in the Sea Empress disaster will exchange knowledge
accumulated with those involved in other major oil spills, including
the Braer oil spill in Shetland, the Exon Valdez spill in Alaska
and the Aegean spill in Northern Spain.

Free Your Paths Weekend
Local Ramblers groups will be highlighting problems on their local
paths pressing for action to be taken to get all paths opened
up and free from obstruction by the Year 2000. In Scotland, where
the law is different and many fewer paths are legally recognised,

in and around communities, and the need for an official nationwide

British Gas Wildlife Photographer of the Year 1996 Exhibition
The 150 winning and highly commended photographs of the 13th annual
competition are now on display at the Natural History Museum.
The competition received over 16 000 entries from 52 countries
and the winning photographs show a particular degree of excellence
both in technical skill and the stories behind them - tales of
endurance, determination, passion and above all respect for the
wildlife subjects.

Local Projects Fund Workshops
A series of free one day workshops has been arranged to help community
groups and voluntary organisations to successfully apply for grants.
The workshops will cover an introduction to the LPF and its priority
areas, initiating projects and ways to resource them, sources
of income and meeting matching funding rules, things to know when
applying and for the assessment, and information from successful
local projects and sponsors. The Civic Trust manages the Local
Projects Fund on behalf of Department of the Environment.

RIBA Lectures 1996-1997
A series of lectures, jointly organised by the National Trust
and the Royal Institute of British Architects covering the restoration
of Stowe's garden buildings, the difficulties involved in undertaking
major repairs and retaining historic integrity in an ancient and
romantic manor, the ethics of transforming a private pleasure
ground to a public place, the architectural and decorative history
of Lyme Park and the controversial acquisitions by the National
Trust of two 20th Century properties - Ern Goldfinger's Modern
Movement house in Hampstead and Paul McCartney's council house
in Liverpool.

Production of The Crown Hereafter
Actors interact with schools groups to encourage children to learn
about their cultural heritage. This production is set in 1601,
as Queen Elizabeth is about to call her 13th parliament. Against
